One of the most enduring reminders of the German Democratic Republic is its distinctive architecture, a mix of impressive Stalinist-style buildings and large cookie-cutter apartment blocks constructed to replace the destruction of the war.

Most of these buildings still stand tall against the city skyline, like proud monuments from decades past. Some show signs of decay, from faded colors to total abandonment. This photo essay looks at these structures of old East Germany in today’s light.
